Per esempio "The ring". Ma non mi hanno influenzato direttamente. Sono pervenuto ormai a una mia versione personal horror: a film is often in the wake of the genus to which it belongs after it passed through my hands. If I start with wanting to make a horror movie, then maybe I end up doing something even more extreme. Like here.
The film reflects something of his personal life?
"No, not really. Antichrist is greatly inspired to Strindberg. But Dante was a great inspiration to me. After all, who was not influenced? The film as well as other issues, also addresses the character of a therapy, then something that I have experienced directly. "
The film has only two characters: a novelty for its cinema.
"It was exciting to do something completely new. You think that a film that is destined to be boring, but I hope it is not at all. If, however, around twice the same type of film for sure I'm bored. And to avoid to be bored, I like to experiment, always try my hand at something new. I go where it takes me a passion. "
Why did you choose Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg?
"It was wonderful to work with both. Charlotte is a very private person. It came late in this production, and I think part of the problem we have encountered in finding an actress really interested in the project depends on the nature somehow pornographic the film. Let's face it: not a movie for everyone. I guess this is the reason for which many actresses refused to order the part. Willem Defoe was too great with all the challenges he has faced. "
Where does the title" Antichrist "?
" It's a title well spot on. It is difficult to explain why the film is titled just that. I'm sure that viewers will find out very different conclusions about it. "
In the film, it seems that you do not explicitly speak of religion, but what is your position on this issue?
" I am increasingly convinced that religion is just a bunch of nonsense. It seems to me that some people have invented something to make everyone else behave in a certain way. Religion is a set of laws created by men, who have nothing divine. Maybe there is something divine in the world - I would not exclude it - but keep in mind that I am a democrat, it is difficult to choose one religion over another. Which one should I choose? Does that seem fair that those who live in a given continent should be saved and the other peoples must be allocated to eternal condemnation? ".
He said he came into therapy. Why?
" Three years ago I suffered from depression for the first time in my life. With this film, I tried to react, to recover than when I was lying in bed staring at the wall for days. I did it for two months, without interruption, without having the energy to do anything else. It was a very difficult. At that point not even imagine to come back to do another film. This means that Antichrist is not just that I have worked at full capacity. The doctors have told me that further drug therapies for up to five years after the depression. "
has no idea why it has fallen into depression?
" No one knows exactly for what reasons they fall into depression but I have my own theory. For years, fight against certain phobias and I believe that when the phobia becomes intolerable, the body tries in a sense to take a break, and in this situation falls into depression. The intensity of depression can vary, and some people want to jump off a bridge. But in my case it was not so. Although some film critics may have hoped. "
What do you expect from the Cannes Film Festival?
" Going to Cannes is always an investment ... So I can finance my next film. "
